About the event
The Read Aloud Project (www.thereadaloudproject.com) is a day of action that shows how important and beautiful reading aloud is.
Reading aloud is a wonderful, communal experience. Regular reading aloud also supports children in their development. Children who are regularly read aloud have a greater vocabulary than their peers without reading experience. They learn to read and write more easily, on average bring home better grades and have greater educational opportunities.
Young children first encounter literature through reading aloud. They hear how literary language sounds and unconsciously record their narrative and language patterns. These help them later to understand and interpret texts more easily.
The theme for this years session will be "Nature, Environment and Us".
The project follows the ideology: "Everyone who enjoys reading aloud reads to others".
Spin A Yarn India will coordinate, organise for and execute the entire event. We will be providing reading materials, worksheets, etc. for the participants and the children at NO COST to the school. The vision for the day is 2 fold:
1. Reading Aloud - Reading aloud is an important, if not the most important basis for promoting reading and writing in children. Children who are read aloud are not only more receptive and concentrated, they also later have a significant advantage in language development and cognitive abilities. And this is true for all children, regardless of their origin, education or status as parents. Reading aloud therefore provides a real starting advantage!
2. Bonding - In addition, children to whom parents read regularly, usually establish an intimate relationship with their readers and this in turn facilitates the educational work. It is interesting to note that mothers are still often the readers in the family, but fathers are increasingly taking on this task. Reading aloud therefore supports family cohesion! - Our focus is to bring more fathers to the fold.
Language, more often than not, has been the dividing factor in the history of human civilisation. With the language changing from one country to another and in case of India, from one state to another, it is often difficult to accept this diversity as a unifier of sorts. Spin A Yarn India is trying to change just that. Spin A Yarn India is an attempt to convey that each language, whether or not universal in its growth, is as beautiful as any other you might have ever heard.
